                                About Us

Are you curious about the birds in your back yard?

Did you ever wish you could learn more about nature?

Wish you could meet some friendly folks that love to do stuff outdoors?

Why not become a member of Four Rivers Audubon?   Founded in 1979, we are one of 44 Florida affiliates of the National Audubon Society, serving seven of the northern-most counties in North Central Florida.

Our mission is to connect people with nature and act as a voice for conservation.

We have scheduled  Field trips to Cedar Key, Oleno State Park, PCS (Hamilton County Mines), Alligator Lake, Paine’s Prairie and Ichetucknee River State Park. The opportunity to meet folks from neighboring Audubon Chapters such as Alachua Audubon, Duval Audubon and others give us the opportunity to expand your checklist and your knowledge even further.

Our Citizen Scientists participate in the Fall Migration Count, The Christmas Bird Count (in Hamilton and Columbia Counties), a bird survey at Ichetucknee State Park and the Great Backyard Bird Count. We hold a BIRDATHON in April that will raise money for our Chapter but also give us another round of data regarding the birds in our area.

Working with Professionals, we are asked to participate in the evaluations of Management Plans for Public Lands such as Big Shoals and Suwannee River State Park.  We are often asked to comment on behalf of the environmental community. It is important to acknowledge those leaders who are making wise environmental choices.

Our events are enjoyed by young and old. Beginning with our Birds and Brunch event in the Fall at Alligator Lake we will have monthly activities around the area. Florida Folk Festival,  Earth Day Celebration and several statewide Audubon events are already filling the calendar.

We will again offer Beginning Birding Classes as well as a new class called “Birding by Ear”!  In our seasonal e-mails called Birding Notes you are encouraged to send your questions and sightings to share.  This is a wonderful way to learn what to anticipate and to brag a little when you see something really cool!

We have a particular passion for Alligator Lake and the beautiful Ichetucknee Springs as natural resources for our area and our wildlife.  A number of Springs Working Groups meet quarterly creating a forum for sharing knowledge and strategies for conservation and outreach efforts that continue to influence our community in favor of our fragile Springs systems. We join these meetings and encourage others to participate in the protection of our waters.

Climate Solutions will take on a greater focus for us in the upcoming year.  From simple backyard solutions to advocacy on a Federal Level WE CAN SOLVE IT is our motto.  Learn how to save money and our earth at the same time!!!

Leadership Development can make a difference in your life. With Four Rivers Audubon you have the opportunity to develop leadership skills from leading bird walks to running events.  You might even get sponsored to attend a week-long leadership camp on an Island in Maine!

Beginning membership is only $20/year and entitles you to the National Audubon Magazine as well as the Naturalist (the local Florida publication).  Follow the National Audubon link on our links page to join online.  On behalf of Four Rivers Audubon I would like to invite you to join us. Don’t be shy.  Come join us and begin the journey!  We hope to see you outdoors!

Happy Birding!  Jacqui Sulek – President of Four Rivers Audubon
